Today we had another great Rotary STRIVE meeting, with 16 participants. Superintendent Jon Detwiler started the meeting off with study tips made easier to remember with the mnemonic PECTS (as in muscles), which stands for persistence, environment, communication, time management, and self-care. He went into detail regarding how to use each of these to make study time more effective. If students follow his tips, they will develop their academic “pects” and become stronger students.

Emily Huth discussed the FAFSA and financial aid. Attached is a copy of her presentation, FYI. She reminded everyone that this is an absolute requirement for a student to receive any type of college financial aid (grants, scholarships and/or work study). This form can be filled out online, on a mobile device, or by using a hard copy. She recommended students always mark “yes” to the work study option. Once submitted, the student will get an estimate of school cost and the amount of aid for which he or she will qualify. This application can be accessed now and should be completed and submitted as soon as possible. Emily has a list of FAFSA deadlines for various colleges. Both Emily and Susan are available to assist students with their applications, if needed.

Emily maintains a list of local scholarships, which is continuously updated and can been accessed by students on the High School web site. It is strongly recommended students check this list periodically and apply for those for which they may qualify.

This year’s annual Financial Aid meeting for parents and students will be virtual. It starts off at 5:30 on November 25---please remind your student of this. The link to the meeting can be found in Emily Huth’s Google Classroom.

There will be NO MENTORING next week. Mentoring will resume on November 30.

Congrats to Bob Foster and Andrew Stainbrook, whose students won recognition this month for academic success.

Many thanks to all of you for your support of this program! And have a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday!
